WASTEWATER TREATMENT PLANT CHILLERS

Custom Chillers for Wastewater Cooling

Wastewater treatment plant chillers are used to regulate different processes used to digest and purify wastewater. Many treatment processes generate significant amount of heat that can prevent wastewater plants from optimally treating water.

Whether your MUD or municipality needs water-cooled chillers or air-cooled chillers for wastewater treatment, Cold Shot Chillers can deliver to your exact requirements.

Why Cooling Is Required for Wastewater Treatment

Secondary wastewater treatment involves processes that depend on bacteria to digest and eliminate organic matter from sewage. Popular methods for this decomposition involve activated sludge, trickling filters, and sodium hypochlorite injection.

Many times, bacteria used in water treatment plants will function best at temperatures within 68°F and 95°F. These microorganisms still work when temperatures fall below the ideal range, but temperature increases beyond the prescribed range can destroy bacteria and make the process largely ineffective. It is not common for Cold Shot Chillers to supply industrial chiller systems for bacteria thermal regulation applications, but we supply units for hypochlorite electrolysis cooling more regularly.

Hypochlorite generators within wastewater treatment plants use electrolysis to convert brine water into sodium hypochlorite. This chemical reaction generates a lot of heat, so the produced sodium hypochlorite solution must be cooled before it is distributed to dosing points within the wastewater treatment system.

What Happens When Wastewater Treatment Temperatures Are too High?

High temperatures within wastewater treatment plants can negatively impact bacteria and disinfecting solutions used in secondary treatment processes. In addition to killing vital microorganisms used to decompose organic matter, high temps can damage filtration filaments, and inhibit bacteria’s ability to flocculate sediment.

Alternatively, temperatures that are too low will decrease the efficiency of water treatment processes because bacteria functions at a slower rate under conditions that are too cool. The result is an ineffective purification process that doesn’t reach minimum standards for water discharge.
